Bitlocker decryption status

BitLocker is a full disk encryption feature in Windows OS. It is designed to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes available in the device. If you have Bitlocker encrypted laptop, you can notice that the information regarding the size of the disk is incorrect. This is due to the Bitlocker encryption. Though the below status shows that there is only 5.73GB free, the information is not accurate. The correct size of the drive can be seen once the decryption process is complete.

Steps to decrypt the bitlocker encryption and to view status

Step 1: Navigate to control panel

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\BitLocker Drive Encryption

I have completed the decryption and hence it shows 'Turn on Bitlocker' option.

Check your encryption status and if your encryption is still ON, then you would see the option 'Turn Off BitLocker', you need to click on it and then you need to click on 'Decrypt Drive' option. This starts the decryption process. The process may take about an hour or less depending on the data present in the encrypted drive.

Step 2: Run command prompt in admin mode

To check the status of the decryption, open control panel in admin mode.

click on the windows button on the bottom left hand corner. Type cmd in the search bar. Right click on the cmd.exe and select Run as administrator option.

Step 3: Run the command manage-bde -status

The below status tells that 11% of the data is still encrypted. So, once it turns to 0%, the decryption is complete.

In the below screenshot we can see that the decryption process is completed.

Now, you may see the real size of the hard disk, it is 165 GB.

Now, since the decryption is completed, I am going to set up my new laptop with all the softwares I need. Enjoy configuring yours!
